Introduction
At the end of each month I like to take some time and write about what was great about it. You can call this action what you want — stopping to smell the roses, appreciating the simple things in life, taking stock of the present time — regardless of what you want to call it, I’ve enjoyed doing it because it forces me to look at some of the positive things in day to day life potentially could be easily overlooked. With that as the background, here are last months Greatest Hits. (In chronological order)
1. Won Some Stuff!
The last day of August a fund raiser was held for my nephew who’s dealing with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Though science is on the verge of a cure, this little dude most likely will be living a very expensive life. This was a great event to help him and his parents with some of the medical and home improvement expenses they’ve recently become aware of.
I entered myself into a couple raffles and ended up winning a prize pack! The back included a “man scaping” hair cut, weekend stay at a Marriott, and jazz dance lessons from some school of dance. (I’m giving the dance lessons away… I don’t see myself enjoying that too much.)
I also entered Logan and Chase into a bunch of raffles, and though Logan didn’t win anything Chase won twice! So now we have Nerf Dart guns at our house. Very fun.
2. Aunt Diane Moves Into Heaven
I hate labeling this as a “greatest hit” because there is nothing really great about it on our side of eternity…
This item is sad and joyful at the same time. After a nearly four year battle with cancer, my Aunt Diane passed away on labor day. I’m jotting down some memories for a future post, but no matter what I do I’m not going to be able to communicate just how much she’s going to be missed.
3. The Beaver
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I love movies about down-and-out people putting their lives back together. The Beaver is just such a movie.
Mel Gibson plays a suicidally depressed character, who after a freak accident, splits his personality and lives vicariously through a Beaver puppet he found in a liquor store dumpster (yes, really). As abstract as the concept sounds, it’s actually really well done.
Jodi Foster (who directed) took the movie to a couple places I wasn’t expecting. It’s well worth the watch.
4. Logan starts Preschool
Life seems to be happening in the blink of an eye these days. Logan began preschool! So far he loves it, and we’ve received positive reports from the teachers about it. I can’t get over how much he’s grown. To me it doesn’t feel like he should be starting preschool already.
5. Blue Stone
New music makes me happy. The hypnotic, trance inducing music of Blue Stone makes me very happy. It isn’t often I can put on a Techno-trance album and listen to the whole thing through, but I can’t turn their album, Messages, off.
6. Dead Island
The Halloween season started early for me this year. For whatever reason Dead Island was released earlier than most survival-horror title’s are — normally these things are released a week or two before Halloween to cash in on the “scare factor”. For whatever the reason, I picked up my copy on day one and I’ve been loving the open game play world and apocalyptic setting. It’s without a doubt the best zombie themed game to date.
7. Chase Loses The Helmet!
The first of two real reasons to celebrate. Chase has been wearing a helmet for the past nine months to help “shape out” his skull. Because of some medial science stuff that I don’t really understand, his head was very flat on the back and the intention of the helmet was to correct that. Praise God for the technology to correct things of this nature, but I’m so happy he has that thing off. He never really seemed to mind it, but he’s been so much happier without it.
8. Chase Has His First Hair Cut!
In the same vein as losing his helmet, Chase also had his first every hair cut as-well. It looks like he went from baby to boy with a few snips of the scissors.
9. Logan Gets Off His Heart Medicines
Reason number 2 for an awesome celebration; Logan’s cardiologist has backed him off his heart medicine completely!! This decision was maid after he went through a 24 hour halter monitor test and the results showed no abnormalities what-so-ever.
This little guy’s heart has been a concern of mine since the miocarditice incident earlier this year in January and I am so happy to finally have some peace of mind about this whole nasty ordeal.
I need to stress again what a miracle this was. The doctors are almost in disbelief that he went through what he did and doesn’t have any long lasting residual effects because of it. “Miracle” is the only way to describe it.
There is actually soooo much more that happened this past month that I just don’t feel like getting into; but these highlights will suffice. See ya next year September.
