Windows Not Displaying Folder Names in Thumbnail View

The Issue:

Seemingly out of nowhere, I noticed that wasn’t displaying folder names for any folder with it’s View Type set to Thumbnail. Switching to any other View Type (Title, Filmstrip, etc) would correctly display the folder’s name, but every time I changed it back to Thumbnail the name would disappear again.

The Resolution

After some searching, I was able to find a solution to the issue, and thankfully it was a simple one:

  1. Open the folder containing the folders without names.
  2. From the tool bar, select any view type that isn’t Thumbnail.
  3. Hold down the shift key, and from the tool bar select View -> Thumbnail

Just like magic, the folder’s names should be visible again. Well, maybe not like magic.

What I don’t understand is how this issue began in the first place, and why holding down the shift key toggles the behavior on and off. If I had a little more motivation I’d do a little extra research into the issue, but for now I’m just happy the problem is resolved. If anybody knows why Windows behaves this way, clue me in.
