As much of a Disney/Pixar fanboy that I am I need to be honest about something that bothers me. The first Cars movie was a recycled plot — it wasn’t as original and clever as the Disney PR would have us believe. In fact, you could almost call it a remake of the old Micheal J Fox movie Doc Hollywood. Because Disney/Pixar made all their characters so charming and quirky, I’ve been able to overlook this blatant retelling. I LOVE Cars.
Then I started seeing the first few teaser trailers for Cars 2 and started getting really nervous. The prima facia evidence suggested it was going to be little more than a retelling of the old Bill Murry movie, The Man Who Knew To Little. My faith was shaken. “Really Pixar? You’re going to build the strength of one of your more clever franchises on the back of recycle movie scripts?”
However, after seeing this featurette entitled Getting Back Into Cars, my worries seem to be subsiding. No doubt there will still be similar elements, but it does appear that there will be enough unique and genuine Disney/Pixar magic in this sequel to make it as good as the first one. Here’s hoping anyway.
