Top 5 Thing I Want For My Cublical

Adding to the strange impression I’m sure most of you already have about me, I’m going to make a confession: I actually enjoy going to work in a cubical each day. In fact, when I was just a wee-tyke, I remember visiting my Aunt Diane at her office and marvelling at her cubical. It was a small space inside a vast government building that was hers to do with as she pleased. I wasn’t attracted to the idea of being couped up all day in a small confining space, but rather with the idea of “zonership” of a particualr area in an agency building. Now I’m grown up and I’m the state worker with a cubical all my own. And I’m free to do with as I please — a nicety as since I’ve been married I have zero input to the decoration / layout of anything in my house.

I’ve already personalized my workspace to distinguish my cubical from the sea of others, but there are 5 things which I could really use to “bring the whole space together“:

Office Monkey Play Set

For those of you who have never heard the expression “code monkey”; you’ve had a very sheltered life. My office is full of of these things. Myself included. Of the 4 years I’ve worked in this particular space I don’t think a day has gone by without the phrase “bite me monkey” or “shut up monkey”. What better way to to this atmosphere than with the Office Monkey Playset from the Neato Shop.

Some Disney Vyinalmation

Before you consider this too childish — I should point out that childish things abound in my office. One worker has a fleet of Matchbox jets resting atop his cubical, while another has a line up of M&M figures, another still has surrounded herself in a entourage of stuff animals, and I won’t even go into details about the loss of productivity when a co-worker brought in a collection of vintage 80’s GI Joes and Star Wars toys.

Specifically, I really want these two. One is based off of the malfunctioning elevator from The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney Studios, and the other is modeled off of the creepy grandfather clock found inside The Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom. I think I need to have these.

Medieval Weapon Pushpin Tacks

Pushpins and cubicles go together like ice cubes and cold water. My cubical wall is littered with notes, family photos, and calendars. These things bring a character of their own to my work space, but it could be customized even more with push-pins modeled after medieval weapons! These are a must have as far as I’m concerned.

Voltron USB Drive

Thanks to the awesomeness that is my Google Document’s Account; I don’t really have need of flash drives, but every now and then some sensitive piece of information comes my way that I have to carry home because I don’t trust it over the interwebs. Sure I could just pick up a standard, tiny, colorless flash drive; OR I could call on the awesome robot Voltron to assimilate and protect my data. Which one would you choose?

The 24′ Desk Saver

Not everything on my list is nonsensical. As much fun as I have at work, I actually do a fair amount of work as well — I know… I know… you’re probably not going to believe that statement from a State Worker. This particular organizer would go a long way in helping keep my cubical a little bit more organized and keep my regularly used items close at hand. It’s a bit pricey, but I would get a lot of use out of this thing. I have a birthday coming up… maybe one of you regular readers (and I know you’re out there) can pick me up one?

So those are my picks for right now. I would have also liked to find some sort of clever cubical-wall-hanging-photo-frame, but I didn’t. If you happen to come across a neat one, let me know.
