I was a late adopter of the Pandora service; but since I’ve started using it I’ve been hooked. I love the ability to build and modify stations, share play-lists with friends, and essentially completely customize a “listening experience”. I’ve probably spent more time “tweaking” my radio stations that I should have.
What I’ve found Pandora to be best for is discovering new music. I can’t stand most new music that’s released and the radio stations seem to only want to play the same Katie Perry song over and over again; (I get it, I’m a firework) so Pandora is the perfect tool to use to stock your music collection with. My favorite songs I’ve “discovered” so far are:
The Presidents – John Coulton
Sure it’s a novelty song, but the lyrics are so clever and the beat is super infectious — and if you sing along enough times you’ll learn a little history! That’s what I cal a win-win-win.
Daddy’s Money – David Wilcox
Have you ever heard a song, and after really processing the lyrics you secretly start judging someone because you feel the song could have been written for them? Oh yeah… that’s the case here. I won’t name names — cause she’s probably reading this now (you know who you are. Hi!).
I couldn’t find a Youtube sample of the song, so you’ll have to look this up on iTunes.
Summer Breeze – Johnossi
I’d classify this as a “heart break” song. I don’t have too many reasons to be heart broken these days, but this song still resonated with me. It’s good enough that it made me want to check out some of Johnrossi’s other recordings.
Bad Jokes – Woody Harrelson & John C. Reilly
In a comedy bit taken off of the soundtrack to The Prairie Home Companion
the song Bad Jokes is exactly what you would expect it to be. A series of (really) bad jokes sung -all-country-style. As a HUGE fan of bad jokes myself, there is no way this wasn’t going to make the list. While were on the topic of bad jokes, here’s one of my favorites: A guy has a talking dog. He brings it to a talent scout. “This dog can speak English,” he claims to the unimpressed agent. “Okay, Sport,” the guys says to the dog, “what’s on the top of a house?” “Roof!” the dog replies. “Oh, come on…” the talent agent responds. “All dogs go ‘roof’.” “No, wait,” the guy says. He asks the dog “what does sandpaper feel like?” “Rough!” the dog answers. The talent agent gives a condescending blank stare. He is losing his patience. “No, hang on,” the guy says. “This one will amaze you. ” He turns and asks the dog: “Who, in your opinion, was the greatest baseball player of all time?” “Ruth!” goes the dog. And the talent scout, having seen enough, boots them out of his office onto the street. The dog turns to the guy and says “Maybe I shoulda said DiMaggio?” Anyone whose had a conversation with me about the current state of the music industry knows that I feel there is no worthwhile rock & roll out there. I was beginning to think it was me — after all, I am getting older. But then I heard this song by Cage the Elephant and fell in love with the genera all over again. The entire album is awesome and it made be start rockin’ again. As a side note, I LOVE the video for the song. OK, so I’ve been a Counting Crows fan for years, but I had forgotten how awesome the song Round Here is. This wasn’t so much a discovery for me so much as it was a rediscovery. Like meeting up with a long lost love and finding your feelings for each other are still intact. OK universe, you win. I’m now officially a fan of Country Music band. I’ve fought it as long as I could, but I can’t fight Lady Antebellium any more. The song I Need You Now stay regualr on my station’s rotation and it’s gone from being skipped before it even starts, to tollerated, to enjoyed, to making me check out other songs, to me proclaiming “Lady Antebellum is awesome!”No Rest For The Wicked – Cage The Elephant
Round Here – Counting Crows
Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
