Thoughts About Metro 2033

I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Though the game plays similar to most other first person shooters, a few scripted events, and a couple of survivalist gimmicks — gas masks that require frequent filter changes keep you moving and searching; higher quality bullets doubling as the game’s currency add a strategic dynamic of what type of ammo is used, and how often you use it — keeps things interesting.

The majority of the game unfolds inside underground metro tunnels; an atmosphere which lends itself for some beautifully crafted, often dark, sometimes creepy, albeit somewhat linear, levels.

If there is any short coming to the game, it would be it’s lack of story development. Though characters are introduced, they are never fully developed. The game takes a small turn into the supernatural, yet this is never explained nor explored. Some more detail about why things are happening or what it actually is you’re doing could have gone a long way in furthering the experience.
