I had passed on Revenge of the Fallen up until this point and was quite content with my decision to do so. I didn’t really enjoy the first movie and with all the bad reviews, the a Razzie nomination for worst picture of year, I had given up hope for a good Transformer movie. After discussing these points with my brother he urged me to ‘just watch it’ and respecting his movie tastes I decided to give it a shot — and I’m glad I did.
Revenge of the Fallen can hang both it’s successes and failures on it’s director, Micheal Bay. Bay cannot, and should not, make a human interest story. However, what he can do is make large explosions interesting. This is the whole of the movie.
The scenes that tried to had a human element into the film (characters falling in love, but not being able to say ‘I love you’ to each other, parent feeling emotion over their only son moving away to college, etc…) where the worst any movie I’ve seen in a while had to offer. Seriously, with an impending threat of alien-larger-than-life robots about to take over the planet would the big worry on your mind be how you’re going to normally integrate into college normally?
The scenes that contained robot-on-robot combat where great. It brought a piece of my childhood back watching Optimus Prime alternate between close and ranged combat fighting styles, taking on three enemies at once. I even enjoyed the ‘end game’ battle in which humans and robots fought side by side against the enemy robots. Dare I say that within it’s own context this was ‘believable’?
The bottom line is if you’re a Transformers fan, you need to see this movie and just ignore about 45 minutes worth of pointless drama. If not, you can skip it completely. I’m going to split Revenge of the Fallen right down the middle with a high 5/10.

End battle on the verge of believable? Sure, if you can accept that the robots can be in two places at once…
In two places at once? I’m not sure what you’re referring to..maybe I need to watch the last battle again.
Some of the bots that made up Devastator were fighting the Autobots and the US military while Devastator was climbing the pyramid. One specifically was the green one.
I didn’t like it nearly as much as the first. The first one had more sense or logic, whereas the second was dumbed down to numbness. It was so bad that they even failed at basic arithmetic when Megatron was resurrected. It was five bots that went down, and five came up, but they said it was six! The action portion is top notch, what you’d expect with Michael Bay and giant freaking robots. But the first one still had an element of realism, even if small, that the second failed to have. I’ve got the first one on DVD, the second, well, I’m still undecided on if I’m ever going to buy it. Maybe if Wal-Mart has it in a $5 DVD bin, which is a bummer because I had high expectations.
Here’s looking to a promising third!
