I like to watch some of the more-lesser known, lower budget, movies because every now and then you find a rare gem among the rest of the garbage the Hollywood likes to churn out. Last of the Living is not one of those movies.
Last of the Living tells the story of three guys (who could have been college frat brothers, and probably where in real life) trying to fill their time when the rest of the world gets turned into mindless zombies. They spend their time, watching movies, playing videos game and listening to music; venturing out only occasionally to make a run for the supermarket to stock up on food. On one such run they end up meeting a girl and her father. Following the typical Zombie movie formula, the father gets bitten and ‘turned’ and the girl turns out to be a pilot / scientist who holds the key in reversing the zombie apocalypse.
I can’t really name a single thing the movie does right. When it tries to be suspenseful, it comes off at hokey. When it tries to be funny, it’s just painful — do we really fart jokes in a zombie movie? The actors don’t really act, they just watch each other waiting for their turn to talk and the zombie make-up looks like smeared lip stick. All of these thing could have been overlooked if the characters just weren’t so boring.
The movie did keep my interest, just because I wanted to know how they could possible end it, and the ending was actually decent. But decent by the standard the movie itself set, which isn’t saying much. All in all I’d give Last of the Living a 2/10.
