You would think that any movie opening with a scene of Kate Beckinsale undressing couldn’t be all bad; but you would be wrong. Having seen only one teaser trailer for the movie, I thought White Out was a super-natural, sci-fi thriller set in the frigged Antarctic; but it turned out to be a “who-done-it” on ice. And not even a good one at that.
Beckinsale plays a US Marshall stationed at the bottom of the world so she could have some time to get over the emotional impact of having to shoot her partner when he tried to kill her back in Miami. Nothing ever happens at the bottom of the world, except of course… MURDER!
Once the body is discovered, we have about an hour of watching Kate discover uninteresting clue after uninteresting clue until she finally deciphers that the one person she was close to on the station was the mastermind behind all the treacherous deeds. It turns out he was after nuclear waste, or uncut diamonds. Or something.
White Out left me wondering too much: Why do heroines who receive phone calls that say “You, and only you, must come to this remote, deserted, creepy place. Then you’ll understand.” insist on going? Why did the main villain of the movie simply walk out of the bunker to meet an icy death? I mean, c’me on. If a real US Marshal was facing a murder investigation in a remote region of the world, would they be emotional hurt when the base commander calls for addition help? Why did I want to see this movie?
If it was anybody other than Kate, I wouldn’t even give it the two points: 2/10.
