I think Dana and I are planning our next Disney vacation for 2013. That is the year when the planned improvements to The Magic Kingdom will be completed, and they look vast. The entire area behind Cinderella’s Castle is set to complete revamped. Some rides will be moved, other rides (like Dumbo, see image) will be given a complete make over.
Most notably though will be the addition of three other castles to the fantasy land setting. A castle for Belle, Aurora, and Ariel (The Little Mermaid) will be constructed. I am curious to see how they will scale the castles. They need to be large enough to give themselves an epic feel among the rest of the park’s attractions, yet at the same time the can’t be too large to take away from Cinderella’s Castle. Of the three castles I think I am most anxious to follow the work on Ariel’s. The concept art portrays a coral castle surrounded by water. I’m sure Disney’s Imagineers are already hard at work on this one.
It worth noting that this is the first time a revamp on this scale has been done, not just for Walt Disney World, but for any theme park. Not that I doubt Disney’s ability to streamline this work but it would seem that people coming to visit The Magic Kingdom during the next couple of years may find a large part of Fantasy Land shut down. The true Disney fans wouldn’t complain, but I could see many people arguing over getting their “money’s worth” out of the expensive park ticket. We’ll see.
