Above is a ten minute address given by Ronald Reagan about the dangers of government run health care which originally aired in 1961. 1961! I find it funny, yet at the same time scary, that America seems to have been caught in the same liberal – conservative tug of war for the past 50 years, and most likely more so beyond that.
Let’s do a little experiment in thought. In the past 50 years the government has introduced and run social security and Medicare. The private industry has held control over advancement in computer technology and medical research. Between then and now, take a look at the results of each field. Social security and Medicare have become a joke, and are both broke beyond broke. The advancements in computer and medical has been vast. What do you think would have happened if the government was running computer and medical research? (Think about it… a + b = c) We would most likely have some advancements, but nowhere near the amount the private sector brought us. On top of that; the programs would most likely be bleeding money and unsustainable.
So now here we are. I want you to think about what medical advancements could possibly be stifled in the next 50 years if the government is allowed to get it’s foot into our medical system. There is so much sickness and disease out there that need cures. Are you honestly confident in the United States government to oversee this? (Remember, this is the same institution that oversaw social security…)
I know this is all speculation on my part, but we need to start thinking ‘big picture’. As a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I would not be alive today if it wasn’t for medical advancements made in the 1970s and 80s. I owe my life to private sector (and yes: profit driven) medical and technological research.
